Ever dream of being like Magneto? Now you can get pretty close! Take charge of ferromagnetic objects around you with this amazing electromagnet. Making an electromagnet is super easy. Just get a solenoid, run some current through it, and put a piece of soft iron inside. When you turn off the current, the magnetic power disappears. All you need is about 5VDC (4 - 6V works too) to power this electromagnet. Once powered, it becomes a magnet. Turn off the power, and it's just a regular piece of metal. Since it's a coil, use a motor or solenoid driver with kick - back protection. Our Crickit boards are a great match. Remember, the 'holding force' (here it's 10 Kg / 22 lb) isn't the weight it can pick up. Divide the holding force by 5 - 10 to estimate the pick - up weight. In this case, it can lift about 2 Kg / 4 lb max. The pick - up weight also depends on a flat surface, maximum surface contact, and the ferromagnetic metal content. A flat steel cube is ideal, while oddly - shaped or rubber/plastic - covered items won't work well.
